Interview With Retro Pop Singer Jade Moss

Huddersfield-born, London-based fashionista turned musician Jade Moss talks to us about all things vintage, as well as her new single Only U, and forthcoming EP ‘Backbone Woman.’ From opening up her own bespoke boutiques all around the UK and Europe, Jade has now turned her creative hand to music and encapsulates the most incredible pop and vintage style sensibilities. An artist that lives and breathes retro nostalgia: welcome to the world of Jade Moss.

Tell us about your latest single Only U and the message behind it.
It’s about the early stages of love and the overthinking we often do, as well as when all rational thoughts head straight out of the window.

Where do you take inspiration from in your music?
I love artists from the 1940s, for example, Peggy Lee and Billie Holiday. Both these iconic artists had such a natural and graceful heir to them, alongside immense self-confidence and talent.

Where do you take inspiration from in your fashion?
Again, for me it’s the 1940s - I absolutely love the fashion of the era. I love the coats as well as the complex, detail in the shapes. You also can’t beat the glamorous movie star designs. I’m also in love with the 1960s and 1970s for the flamboyant prints. These eras are very special to me, so I try to mix them all up together.

Do you feel music and fashion go hand in hand?
100%. The best artists have always had a very individual sound and style. It’s what makes them so iconic and memorable.

What's your go-to stage outfit?
Anything with lots of vibrant colours or a wacky, dazzling print.

Vibrant colours

Jade has a fantastic retro sense of style. We love the way she combines bright colours and prints in her 1960s inspired looks. We think Jade would look fab in this outfit which includes a striking 60s true vintage shift dress with a striped skirt, collar & sleeve cuffs. We have paired it with this gorgeous red pure wool cardigan and a red vintage frame bag which comes with a matching purse. To add a touch of retro glamour we have finished the look with a pair of bold red catseye sunglasses.

Can you tell us a little bit about your transition from fashion to music?

I started out in the world of fashion, but there was always a voice bubbling in the background, with music calling. I’m now the happiest I’ve ever been - I’m getting the opportunity to combine my two passions and make a career out of it. It’s literally like living the dream.

Who would be your dream musical collaboration?
John Legend or The Weeknd. Both artists are incredible and working with them would be absolutely amazing.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
This is always the question that makes me sound full of myself, but I think in 5 years' time, I’ll be a well-known singer-songwriter in the UK and around the world.

What does 2021 have in store for the vintage musical world of Jade Moss?
My forthcoming EP, ‘Backbone Woman’ is set to be released in early June. I’ll also be planning my tour which is really exciting. As well as this, I’m also going to be writing my album. Busy, busy, busy!

Vintage clothes

If you're a fan of Jade's eclectic sense of retro fashion here are a few more pieces that we think she would love. Go for one of our bright 60s vintage dresses, a pair of retro sunglasses and some colourful accessories. She clearly loves fur and leopard print so this vintage fur coat and leopard half moon vanity case definitely wouldn't look out of place in her incredible wardrobe! For even more inspiration take a look at our 1960s vintage clothing collection.
